Unlike the thin, airy bubbles produced by high-cleansing coconut oils—which can strip the skin’s surface—tallow creates a dense, small-bubble foam with a velvet-like texture. Hard Water Compatibility (Clean Rinse Technology)

Standard soap often fails in the presence of mineral-heavy water, leaving behind "soap scum" (calcium deposits) on your skin. We've optimized our formula with a natural chelator (Sodium Citrate). This acts as a water-softener within the lather itself, binding to minerals to ensure a truly clean rinse—even in the toughest "hard water" environments.

The star is obviously the Grassfed Tallow which makes a very mild gentle but effective soap that leaves you feeling clean but not attacked. Grassfed Tallow is rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with beneficial fatty acids, and yes, these vitamins can be absorbed through the skin because tallow's composition closely mimics human sebum, allowing deep penetration to nourish, repair the skin barrier, and provide antioxidant protection. Castor oil is an interesting oil as it helps the soap make more bubbles and helps keep them from popping so easily. It is also a humectant which means it helps your skin grab water and hold it better. Our Castor oil is organic, cold pressed, unrefined and hexane free so it does add a little color to the bar as well but it doesn’t really smell like anything anyway. Water and that fancy word for lye is actually not even in the soap when you get it. These are used up in a chemical reaction that just makes the fats into special salts which is essentially what soap is, fancy salt. Essential oils or Fragrance oils are there for fun and lets be honest with ourselves sometimes we need to wind down and focusing on a relaxing scent, scent being so very tied to our deepest memories, is a great way to get a little escape from reality even if only for a moment. Sodium Citrate is literally a mineral made from citrus fruit juice and salt. Its job is to help you feel cleaner, less itchy and not have to clean your shower so dang much. It is what is called a chelator an it takes hard water and makes it less hard by grabbing the minerals out of the water in your shower and making them unable to make soap scum. Colloidal oatmeal is a natural skin soother it is literally just oatmeal that has been ground super fine and works like a built in lotion of sorts. Sugar is just a old school trick to give you more creamy bubbles, don’t worry it’s totally keto…. Please don’t eat it! Kaolin clay helps make the soap last longer, feel smoother and actually helps remove dirt from the skin as well.

Like we said, we have no secrets here. Here we outline each ingredient in our Bair’s Body Butter. This recipe is the work of over 3 years making products for myself and close friends and family. It is ultra concentrated so even a 2oz tin should easily last a whole month and probably more! You’ll notice it is not a whipped balm however this is intentional. Ask around and you will find that whipped products hate warm weather and like to deflate leaving you with a sad container looking only half full. So after several trials and errors we feel we have hit a sweet spot where the body butter has the lightness and glide of a whipped product but the weather tolerance of a poured product! No, the research showing that tallow in general does was done several decades ago on rabbits. Tallow in and of itself is very similar to human sebum and is readily absorbed into the skin.

Most handmade soaps struggle in Missouri’s hard water. When soap molecules meet calcium and magnesium in the water, they create "lime soap"—that sticky gray film known as soap scum.

We’ve engineered our formula to fight this using a specific chelator (sodium citrate). This ingredient acts like a magnet, "grabbing" the minerals in the water so the soap can do its job: cleaning you, not the shower glass.

The Reality Check: We use a generous amount of sodium citrate (35g per batch) to ensure a clean rinse. Absolutely, tallow is prized for it’s similarity to human sebum. When you wash you remove the natural oils from the outer layer of the skin, since tallow is so similar it does a great job of replacing it. Especially with out generous 10% superfat (extra unsaponified oil). This superfat also works as a chemical buffer to ensure the soap could never be too lye heavy.
